Meet Your Doula-Whitney Teel

Hey there! We at Wilmington Coastal Doulas wanted to give you a little look in to who we are and created this blog series, Meet Your Doula. Kicking off the series to start, is the owner and doula, Whitney Teel.

1. If you didn't have to sleep, what would you do with your extra time?

Oh..so so much! My house would be clean and I would have time to implement systems for all us Teel's, catch up on my life to-do lists, work to-do lists, sleep, watch some Netflix, work out...can you tell I've thought about this before?! :D

2. What's your favorite piece of clothing you own?

Not gonna lie, it's black leggings (temperature control ones that you can wear in the summer!) and a comfy tshirt. I'm going for simple and comfy. That's my favorite piece I wear. My favorite piece I own...this beautiful purple, sequin covered dress that I have not worn yet.

3. What job would you be terrible at?

Giving directions or one that involves lots of driving. Not just terrible...the worst.

4. What skill would you like to master?

Time management! No that's boring...carpentry? That'd be fun! I'd build loads of cool things.

5. When people come to you for help what do they usually want help with?

People usually come to me when they need help navigating a tough situation or to help them organize some room/cabinet in their house. Or just to listen. I love to be there for all of those!

6. What are some small things that make your day better?

Our children's laughter makes my day better for sure! Family time, no bake cookies and when Michael makes dinner (which is more often than not!) and I loooove rainy days! Huge bonus if there is thunder and lightning.

7. What would be your ideal way to spend the weekend?

My ideal weekend would be what we call a "long weekend". During that long weekend my family and I would be having a great time spending all day outside in nice cool weather, fishing, playing, exploring, hiking, and roasting marshmallows!

8. What is your favorite genre of movie or book?

I love movies that make me feel #allthefeelings. To give an example, some of my favorite movies are The Green Mile, Erin Brockovich, The Time Travelers Wife, Warrior <<< all so great!

9. Why did you decide to do the work you are doing now?

I decided to be a birth and postpartum doula because nonjudgmental support goes a very long way with a person. Someone that doesn't give you their opinion or tell you what to do, but instead listens and helps you implement in YOUR life what YOU want. Pretty great concept right? My specific field of interest just so happens to be with birthing and postpartum families.

10. If you could make one rule that everyone had to follow, what rule would you make?

Oh that'd be fun! I would make the rule that everyone needs to do something for someone else that they don't want to do, daily. Big or small doesn't matter and with a joyful heart.

11. What is one of your favorite smells?

I love love love the smell of my sweet babies after they get their bath and are all snuggly in their pj's. That and my husband. Those are my favorites.

12. What would be some of the most annoying things about having you as a roommate?

I think I'd make a pretty good roommate actually! I am respectful of privacy, clean, organized...maybe they would be annoyed if they wanted to hang significantly more than I did? I like to be locked up in my room sometimes and tend to be done 'peopling' when I need to regain some energy. I do that by being alone.

13. What gets you fired up?

Like motivated fired up or mad? Nothing motivates me more than being told (either directly or indirectly) that I cannot accomplish something that I really want to accomplish, whether it be big or small. I don't actually have to be told that honestly...sensing it from someone is enough.

14. Which of your scars has the best story behind it?

I have quite a few scars from playing softball when I was younger, but the one with the best story might be the one I received from the boys when they were "sword fighting". Unfortunately for me a broom and swiffer sweeper are slightly too large for young boys to handle so in the midst of me stopping the battle, I got cracked in the side of the face with the swiffer sweeper because they couldn't manage the awkward weight of the thing. Right beside my eye split open. Don't think I didn't play that up to show them what they had done...blood and all. ;)

15. What's the best thing you got from your parents?

Love & understanding. Sounds cliche' but I was always loved no matter what I admitted to or was caught doing! Also, determination, authenticity and a disdain for conformity to others standards. ;)

Did you catch any common interests? We'd love to hear them! Stay tuned for the rest of the series, including Hali, Taryn and Deb.
